1.2 Ultrastructure of cells
Extra cellular components.
These are substances and materials outside of cells.
Example are:
The plant cell wall (this is considered to be outside the cell). The cell wall maintains cell shape, prevent excessive water uptake, and holds the whole plant up against the force of gravity.
Animal cells secrete glycoproteins that form the extracellular matrix.
This functions in support, adhesion (allowing cells to stick together) and movement of cells relative to each other.
Electron microscopes allow far greater magnification and resolution
